It kind of redefines the age old concept of a kodak moment – a moment worth remembering forever. Except here, a simple photograph of his grandfather before the war is a kodak moment. I think the way it is here, you get the sense that every moment is a kodak moment; as meaningless and insignificant as it may seem, its worth remembering.

But that's just my take. The effect of the blurring is particularly worth mentioning. You have this lovely, peaceful setting being portrayed, but its blurry. Its out of focus. And thats a powerful statement to make. It goes along with the points made in the Blurred Flower work from a while back.

But that's just my take. Every week now, I'll have some kind of poll up (art-related or not) asking you guys your opinion on something that has me wondering. Question of this week: Should Marijuana be legalized? Feel free to comment on any post with an explanation/argument for your answer.

2. You can see all of the pictures and paintings that have been featured so far here!

3. I encourage you all to comment! I'm sure you guys all have your opinions on the artworks, and we all want to hear!! Feel free to post anonymously. I will only moderate inappropriate comments and comments with excessive profanity.

4. If you have drawings, paintings, stories, poems, or ANY other form of art that you want me to post, e-mail them to me at artinyourworld@gmail.com! Feedback is guaranteed!

5. Because I don't want to deal with this in the future, I'm going to emphasize right now that any work featured here fully belongs to the artist. Sometimes, you just need a break from your friends and everything (however great they might be) to relax, think, etc.

But that's just my take. When looking at a smaller version of the picture, it doesn't look too amazing, but when you look at the original (larger) file (which you can do by going to the original page, linked above), you can see all the details and it really does look gorgeous. The effect created by the mixture of text and color is amazing.

Unfortunately, I can't see the poems themselves, but the artist's comment does provide insight on the purpose of this work. The attempt to "juxtapose pretty and sad," which can also be interpreted as happy or sad, is interesting. I think that its always important to be able to find beauty or happiness in anything, and its a point the artist manages to get across through this work.

*Edit:* The artist kindly sent me a list of the poems used in the background:

Darkness by Lord Byron

Ah, are you digging my grave? by Thomas Hardy

Winter: My Secret by Christina Rossetti

As kingfishers catch fire by Gerard Hopkins

The Indian Girl's Song by Percy Bysshe Shelley

In the Artist's studio by Christina Rossetti

Ode on Melancholy by John Keats

A Poison Tree by William Blake

To Tirzah by William Blake

Break, Break, Break by Lord Tennyson

Holy Thursday by William Blake

The Eagle by Lord Tennyson

Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Never Pain to Tell Thy Love by William Blake

There Is No Natural Religion by William Blake

I will read through these poems and have something to say soon.

But that's just my take. It really is a gorgeous, simple photograph of the sunset. I really can't find a reason to analyze this. Can't we just appreciate it for its beauty?

That actually reminds me of a poem I read in English class a couple weeks ago (which I don't think I have the rights to post): An Introduction to Poetry by Billy Collins. It really gets across the message that everything doesn't have to be analyzed. Sometimes things can just be appreciated.

But that's just my take. It's abstract, but then not abstract at the same time. The artist here could definitely be making many different statements. One that I thought of was quite simply how many things could be overlooked when trying to obtain food.

But that's just my take. What about you?

PS - I want to emphasize here that I will be giving priority works e-mailed to me, as opposed to works I found on deviantArt and other websites, because:

It tells me the artist is really interested in having his or her work here.

I don't have to worry about copyright issues because by e-mailing it to me, the artists are saying that they want their work here.

Faceless Jungle on March 24, 2009

Hey readers!!

For today, I have for you guys this interesting work from dA.

Faceless Jungle by Gygaxis - found on deviantArt

Isn't this just beautiful?

This scene really wouldn't be too out of place in an Indiana Jones movie or a book or movie of that kind. In her solitude, she thought back to the special anniversary dinner Bill came late for. The new dress he didn’t notice. His hand slamming the table, making the dishware clatter. Her draping her coat around her shoulders and stepping out into the night.

He shouldn’t have been late in the first place, she fumed. I’ve had enough of that temper. Glaring into the wall of mirrors behind the bar, she noticed her scowl, her blue eyes narrowed out of hostility, her flaxen hair spilling over her shoulder. Annoyed with her disheveled appearance, she turned away to pick up her glass and raise it to her crimson lips. Sipping from the dark liquor, she surveyed the half-empty room. At this late hour, only a handful of night owls populated the room. Carol wondered where Bill was now. Still sitting at home?

No, of course not. Probably gone back to work. He’s always working through the late hours.

She set the glass back down, and turned her attention to the small raised platform which served as a stage. She searched through the band members setting up the stage, and her eyes fell on the man preparing the microphone stand. His brown tousled hair shone in the spotlight, and he was sharply dressed – tall, but not too tall. After positioning the microphone, he straightened up, signaled to the rest of the band, and they began to play.

Carol immediately recognized her favorite song. She began to lightly tap her feet to the rhythm against the leg of her tall cushioned stool. She let the saxophone’s bluesy slink and velvet vocals draw her in.

                    “If I should lose you
The stars would fall from the sky…”

Clearing her throat, Carol looked down and took another sip. She then crossed her legs and smoothed out her dress, and went back to watching the singer. He gently swayed in time with the music, tenderly caressing the microphone stand.

                   “Leaves would wither and die
The birds in May-time, they’d sing a mournful refrain.
And I would wander around, hating the sound of rain.”

She realized he never took his eyes off her as he crooned the words. Carol herself had neglected her glass, her dress, and everything else around her. Everything except the mesmerizing melody and the hypnotic voice. Even if she wanted to, she wouldn’t have been able to avert his gaze.

                   “With you beside me
The rose would bloom in the snow
                    With you beside me
                    If I ever lost you…”

A corner of Carol’s mouth twitched up in a smile. The man was glowing, by God.

“All is in vain if I…
                    If I ever lost
                    You….”

The song ended with one last lingering note, and everyone present gave an appreciative round of applause, Carol included. The smile on her face mirrored the one on his. Works every time, she thought.

His eyes never leaving Carol’s face, he smirked and spoke into the microphone:

                    “Cute dress, Carrie.”

Playful gasps, whoops, and giggles echoed throughout the audience. Though Carol remained silent, her smile widened. That was enough encouragement for him.

“How’d you like the song, sweetheart?”

“Just fine, Bill,” she called back from the bar. “Just fine.”

Hey readers!!!

Today, I have for you a short story that was e-mailed to me. The author requested anonymity so...

The Blues by Anonymous - found in my Inbox

---------- WARNING: SPOILERS----------

I thought this story was well written, and I was completely caught off-guard by the twist at the end.

Isn't the change in heart for Carol from the beginning to the end just incredible? Also, the change comes incredibly smoothly! I really think this story says something about being forgiving, and how sometimes you just have to forgive and forget. I also liked the effort by Bill to apologize.

I think the use of the song's lyrics the story was also very well done. It really moved the story forward and added to the plot, while at the same time being interesting.

To any musicians out there, I'd love to see one of you sing this song!

But that's just my take. What about you?

Anshul J

P.S. Before I leave, I also want to urge all of you readers to send me your work!! Gorgeous, eye-catching, etc.

I really found it interesting, though, that the rainbow in the background was in an orderly fashion, while the snowstorm was entirely chaotic. It made me think about how, sometimes, things can just be completely random, yet make total sense at the same time.

But that's just my take. So much to think, so little time
She's out in the rain, it calms her busy mind
A welcome lull before the storm and the white noise begins
Her Dad comes out, they watch the mist roll in
She finds
Comfort in her crooked line

This need for symmetry
They can call it what they please
It doesn't matter in the end
She says "I am what I am"

Her friends all know, they don't need to understand
Dinner for two, she smiles and holds his hand
While under the table, hidden in her shoes
Her toes trace shapes she sees around the room
She's fine
Walking her crooked line

----------------------------------------------

Isn't she amazing? She really has a gorgeous voice.

I found the lyrics for this song particularly interesting. When I thought about it, I felt that it told the story of a girl who always tried to fit in, but after a while, she realizes that she's different, accepts it and eventually takes comfort in the fact.

I know you've probably heard that kind of thing a million times before, but how many times have you heard the story told like that?

But that's just my take. Here's what he said about it:

"Since I am more artist than writer, I have created this picture. The red unicorn is the anger that protected me (but is now chained) the dead unicorn is what I started with (the horn cut off, I would have nightmares about this as a child) and the purple unicorn rising like a phoenix from those equine ashes, is what I am now, still not whole, still, little more than a ghost in some ways, but I am trying and I feel as though my horn (spirituality/purity/center/creativity) is returning."

Really, I found the work to be beautiful. I also really appreciated the paradoxical use of using a unicorn to represent anger. After all, aren't unicorns supposed to be pure, perfect beings representative of all things good?

I also appreciated the meaning of the small details in the work. For example, the widespread wings of the red unicorn really demonstrate its protective nature. Also, the wispy design of the purple unicorn really adds an interesting element. Its kind of like saying, out of the ashes rise something anew, something more powerful, yet less real.

But that's just my take. What about you?

Anshul J

*EDIT*: Unfortunately, I had to remove the picture because it was loading extremely slowly and causing problems on a number of computers. Now, honestly, I'm not the greatest at interpreting abstract art but when I saw this work, I was reminded of the Yin-Yang symbol. Maybe that's what the artist was aiming for here? Or maybe not. Who knows? After all, it's abstract art.

But that's just my take. The montage of special effects is particularly eye-catching.

I actually found the story told in the lyrics to be amazing. When I was thinking about them, the story I came up with was: A man loves a woman, but he thinks that she doesn't want to love him. Even if she did love him, he feels that she would resist it. Or it could be that there's some sort of situation preventing their relationship.

Have you ever experienced that kind of thing? Where you're just in some kind of situation that's supposed to be good, but for some reason, it just doesn't feel right?

But that's just my take. What about you?

Anshul J

Blurred Flower on March 14, 2009

Hey readers!!

First off, I would like to announce Little Yellow Balloon by Jmaon116 for being selected as the favorite featured work so far! It really caught my as soon as I saw it, and the artist really deserves a lot of credit for creating such a beautiful image.

This piece could actually mean a lot of different things. When I looked for a meaning in the work, I thought that it could just mean that sometimes things are just out of focus. Or maybe something is just so beautiful that you just can't see it properly. Have you ever had a moment like that? When you're just out of touch with the world and at a certain point you realize you're just not seeing the world clearly? (or something along those lines)

But that's just my take. As much as I'd like to say I would've, I sincerely doubt it, and I'm sure that's the same with a lot of you guys.

So with this post, I think its less about the photography and more credit to the photographer for simply having the awareness to notice such a beautiful scene.

But that's just my take. She did not allow herself to linger over the taste, unpleasant as it was. A warm, trickling sensation shot through her body, the burn of alcohol dancing upon her tongue.

“Give me something to chase that with,” Felicity choked, grimacing in spite of herself. Katie passed her a cup of hot chocolate, her wrist twisting haphazardly under the weight. It was a jumbo cup of cocoa that they had decided to make tonight, their only known cure for the nasty tang of whisky. Felicity reached out for the cup, her hands floundering desperately. Finally, she raised the warm mug to her petite lips, caressing the sweet flavor, allowing it to fully cloak the sting that lingered at the back of her throat.

“Shthere you go!” Katie slurred, a careless giggle slipping through her calm exterior. Every bone in her body seemed to be relaxing. Felicity smiled to herself as she, too, began to feel the promising sensation. She sighed, leaning back against the edge of the bed, feeling the whole world begin to tilt on its axis. It was okay.

“Another shot.”

-------------------------------------

Hi readers!!

Today, I'm breaking from the norm and giving you guys a (very) short story I stumbled across on Live Journal.

"Oh, Alcohol." by essentialsanity - found on Live Journal

Reading between the lines here, I found this poem to be really interesting and powerful.

Especially the line, "the whole world begin to tilt on its axis. It was okay." Doesn't that just feel wrong? When the world is flipping upside down, you should be panicking and freaking out, not calming down, right?

Well, when I thought about it some more, I realized that there often are moments when you want everything in the world to change. Sometimes things just aren't going right, or maybe you're just bored of the status quo.

But that's just my take. In a lot of ways, fear is the opposite of hope. And then, at the same time, fear is integral to hope. After all, if we don't fear anything, what is there to hope for?

Another point is that, in these tough times, Fear and Hope are both two very common emotions and very important emotions. After all, everyone is fearing lay offs, foreclosures, etc. At the same time, everyone has hope that they will make it through this crisis okay.

I also think it's interesting that Jorge1087 decided to use Roscharch, in light of the movie, Watchmen. However, because I'm unfamiliar with the movie/graphic novel, I can't elaborate much in that regard. Anyone with knowledge of the movie, I'd love to see you tell me what you think in the comments.

Jorge1087 kindly commented on his usage of Roscharch:

"You bring up some interesting thoughts on Hope vs. Fear. Rorschach and Obama are polar opposites. On one end you have a leader advocating change in hope of a better future. The other, a cynical social outcast, believes the world is a cesspool and that a significant positive change cannot truly be made."

But that's just my take. What about you?

Anshul J

*EDIT* - Link is fixed so now it leads to the art itself, instead of the download link.

Little Yellow Balloon on March 10, 2009

Hi readers!!

Today, I found this gem on dA.

Little Yellow Balloon by Jmaon116 - found on Deviant Art.

I actually found this piece very interesting. Now, despite the fact that the balloon in the drawing is actually rather large, the work is entitled "Little Yellow Balloon." Now why could that be?

I looked at it as the Yellow Balloon looking up at the sky and being intimidated by the great blue sky. This could actually be a pretty cool metaphor for someone and their dreams or the future or even just something like a building

Isn't it so easy to feel little when standing next to a skyscraper? To feel intimidated when thinking about going for your dreams? Or some task you may have to accomplish the next day? Or the next year?

But that's just my take.
